Breast Lumps: When is It a Cause for Concern

Breast lumps are, more often than not, harmless tissue growth. It may sometimes hurt, which can be worrisome. Other types may increase the chance of breast cancer, such as hyperplasia and intraductal papilloma. As a result, routine check-ups with our breast surgeon allow early detection for a suitable treatment plan.

It is crucial to recognise early signs and symptoms of breast lumps early to get appropriate treatment.

  • Breast pain
  • Nipple discharge
  • Change in breast size, shape or contour
  • Inverted, creased or scaly nipple
  • Dimpled, puckered or scaly breasts
Remember, these symptoms may also be present in breast cancer. If you’re experiencing symptoms or want to prevent future breast conditions, visit our breast specialist for early screening, accurate diagnosis and individualised treatment. Start caring for your breast health today.

Services: Diagnosis & Treatment Options

We offer a wide range of services to address all aspects of breast health and the different needs of our patients, including:

Breast Screenings
  • Mammogram produces a detailed X-ray image of your breast and looks for early signs of breast cancer. It has two plates that compress your breast to spread the tissue apart.
  • Ultrasound reveals breast changes, such as lumps and fluid-filled cysts not seen on a mammogram. This uses a handheld, wand-like instrument called a transducer, which a breast surgeon places on the skin’s surface with gel.
Diagnostic Tests
  • Breast Biopsy removes a sample of breast tissue to determine if a breast lump is cancerous. It may require general anaesthesia and a large needle to obtain the sample.
  • Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging captures multiple breast images to assess the extent of cancer. It uses an MRI machine with a large, central opening where you may need to lie facedown on a padded scanning table.

Treatment Options

For Breast Lumps
Excisional biopsy is an outpatient procedure to remove the entire lump. Tissue excision may take at least 60 minutes with a local anaesthetic.
Fine-needle aspiration to drain the fluid from a breast cyst. It involves a thin, hollow needle attached to a syringe to withdraw fluid.
For Breast Cancer
Cryoablation Electrotherapy uses extremely low temperatures to kill cancer cells and treat small breast cancers for patients that may not tolerate surgery.
Intraoperative Radiotherapy uses high doses of radiation therapy during surgery to kill unseen cancer cells.
